Sometimes you find a product that is so effective it leaves you with a strange feeling of awe and excitement. It's almost as if the usual mediocrity of things momentarily gives way to a realm of great beauty and order. Ok, maybe that is overselling it a bit. However fishing is a sport that is all about the gear. Occasionally I will find something that is so ridiculously effective I get a subtle charge just thinking about it. In no particular order, here are the top 10 fishing items that I have found to be a joy to use.
With summer in most areas of the world comes the sun beating down on the face, especially noticable when outside fishing. A ball cap is nice for giving the eyes some shade, but one gets the sense that it doesn't shade nearly enough. Enter the Adams long bill cap. The longer bill provides extra shade for the face in addition to the UV45+ sun protection. It's low profile and precurved bill helps you look pretty good in it too.
Ah - stick bait. What would we do without you? You drive bass so wild. The Yamamoto Senkos are the creme de la creme of stick baits. Get some and get ready for some excitement.
For fishing from the bank, I like to use a medium action spinning rod. I actually have a 7 foot pole and it works great, but I feel like a little shorter would make it more maneuverable along the bank. So I recommend a 6'6" or 6' rod. I drive a car, so a 2 piece is a must which I have no problems with. I have heard people say a one peice is much nicer to use, so if you have the vehicle to fit it, consider that.
For some reason the NetBait finesse worm - Key Lime Pie color has been the most ridiculously effective bait I've ever used. It's not just bass I've caught with these - I've caught catfish, crappie, even blue gill. I speculate that the bait is optimally sized, shaped, and scented to appeal to many fish, along with a commonly effective color (greenish). I plan on trying more colors next season. In any case these baits are magic.
The Berkley Havoc small fishing bag is what makes efficiently working a bank possible. Say goodbye to the days of packing up a tackle box and tying up a hand before changing spots and instead put on a strap. This bag is plenty big enough to hold all your needed gear, but not too big to get in the way and weigh you down. The attractive shape and color gives this bag a nice sporty look too.
I've caught more trout with Joe's Flies spinners than any other bait with the possible exception of live minnows. For some reason these spinners drive trout crazy. I've used other brands of spinners, but for some reason I just don't get the results I do with Joe's Flies. Order some today - you won't regret it!
Mitchell makes great mid-range reels. I cut my teeth on Mitchell's. These reels are durable and well made. They do the job without breaking the bank. With fishing gear, I gravitate towards the middle when it comes to quality and price. This gives you adequate performance while keeping the hobby cheap.
Berkley vanish line does just what it claims - vanish. I do seem to catch more fish with this line and I attribute that to improving the presentation via it's vanishing and superior handling properties. Fluorocarbon line is stiffer than monofilament, which improves sensitivity for strike detection.
Bullet weights are great for worms and other soft plastics. I like steel because they are heavy and non-toxic (rather than lead which are just heavy). They are also much cheaper than tungsten. Tungsten is denser which in some situations is probably superior because it causes the bait to sink quicker. However I have caught plenty with steel.
Small Plano boxes are not only awesome, they are made in the USA. Stay organized and efficient by divvying up your gear into small boxes like this Plano. They really help me.
